Debating Update – First Round Excitement!

On Wednesday 11th February, our Grade 6 debaters attended their first debating fixture of the year at Springfield Convent Junior School. The proceedings began at 3pm with introductions, followed by a fun “war cry” session where each school had the opportunity to introduce themselves, a wonderful icebreaker, especially as all of our learners were debating for the first time! 

We entered two teams:

• Proposition Team (arguing in favour of the motion): Raymond Smithers, Seth Arendse, Buchule Botha, and Amyoli   

    Skeyi (Chairperson). They debated against Springfield Primary.

• Opposition Team (arguing against the motion): Alice Reddick, Jessica Xu, Layla Irvine, with Avalon Leclezio as timekeeper. They debated against Bergvliet Primary.

Although both teams did not secure wins this time, we are incredibly proud of their efforts. For their very first debate, they presented strong arguments and showed great courage and composure. With a little refinement and continued practice, they are well on their way!

Most encouraging of all has been their enthusiasm. At our very next debating session on Thursday morning, the learners were eager to begin preparing for the next round (TBC), asking questions and ready to improve. Their excitement and determination have been wonderful to see.
