About The Grove Social Club
The Grove Social Club began in 1969, when Principal Victor Coop invited the pensioners from the surrounding Claremont to come and enjoy a dinner at the school, as a way of thanking them for all they had done for society. It was such a success that more than 50 years later the tradition continues and in 2019 we celebrated our 50th anniversary!
Every few months, we host up to 150 pensioners to a 3 course dinner in school the hall, which is transformed into a beautiful dining room.
We collect them from their homes, provide the meal as well as entertainment and then take them home again. The evening lasts from about 18h00 to 21h00.
For many of them this is their only evening out in 3 months, and they love it! The areas we fetch them from range from Claremont, Rondebosch, Grassy Park and Diep River.
The Grade 7’s act as hosts and parent volunteers are responsible for:
Sending out invitations
Buying and sorting ingredients
Cooking (this is done at your own home)
Helping in the school kitchen on the afternoon/evening of the relevant dinner
Transporting our guests to and from the dinner – we are always needing more volunteers to transport our guests
Serving and clearing
And sourcing entertainment
We would love you to join us in this wonderful outreach, we always need new parents to join us. It is the most rewarding experience and there are many ways to help depending on your availability and time. If you are interested, in assisting in any way please contact Jamilla Parker-Khan on jpk@raft.co.za
