Term 2 - 2026
Week 9
🎤Feedback:
As we approach the halfway mark of 2026, I find myself reflecting on a question I am often asked: Why music? Why the arts?
For me, the answer has always been simple, yet deeply personal.
Music is a gift.
It is far more than notes on a page, rehearsals after school, concerts, examinations, or performances. Music has the remarkable ability to connect people, build confidence, develop discipline, and create a sense of belonging. It teaches our children to listen, to collaborate, to persevere, and to express themselves in ways that words often cannot.
Research continues to highlight the positive impact that music education has on cognitive development. Learners engaged in music often strengthen their concentration, memory, problem-solving abilities, creativity, and emotional intelligence. Yet beyond all the measurable benefits, there is something even more powerful that music offers: it reaches the heart.
Throughout my own life, music has always been a safe space. It has been a place of hope, comfort, challenge, joy, and growth. It has provided opportunities, friendships, and memories that I continue to treasure. Perhaps because of this, one of the greatest visions for our Music Department has never simply been about creating accomplished musicians. Rather, it has been about creating a space where every child feels that they belong.
Not every learner will pursue music professionally, and not every learner will stand in the spotlight. However, every learner deserves to experience the feeling of being part of something meaningful; a place where they are seen, valued, encouraged, and given the opportunity to discover their unique gifts. Whether through an ensemble, choir, culture code, band, classroom music lesson, or individual tuition, our aim is that every child who enters our music spaces feels a sense of connection and belonging.
This sense of community was beautifully evident at our recent Grade 3 Music Concert. It was a privilege to witness the culmination of months of hard work from our young musicians. The evening was a celebration not only of musical achievement, but of learners stepping confidently onto a stage, supporting one another, and sharing their talents with family and friends. What the audience experienced was the product of patient learning, encouragement from teachers and parents, and the natural talent that exists within our learners. It served as a powerful reminder of why music education matters and of what can be achieved when children are given opportunities to flourish. I was also left speechless watching one of our Senior Marimba Bands perform at the recent Cape Town Marimba Festival. Their performance was outstanding, but what moved me most was not just how well they played—it was how united they were and how much they genuinely loved being on stage together.
As I watched them perform, I felt incredibly proud. There was a joy, confidence, and sense of belonging that radiated from the group, and it gave me goosebumps. Moments like these remind me why music matters so much—it brings people together and gives our learners a place to shine.
Every day, as I walk through our music corridors, I am reminded that something special is taking place. The music rooms are filled with laughter, determination, and friendship. In a world that can often feel rushed and demanding, the arts provide young people with an opportunity to pause, create, reflect, and discover who they are.
I feel incredibly privileged and grateful to be part of such a vibrant and passionate Music Department. Our Music staff continue to invest countless hours nurturing talent, fostering confidence, and creating opportunities for every learner who walks through our doors. The enthusiasm, dedication, and growth we witness daily is a testament not only to our teachers, but also to the wonderful support we receive from our families and wider school community.
Thank you for continuing to champion culture and the arts. Together, we are creating experiences that will remain with our learners long after they leave our school. As we look ahead to the second half of the year, we do so with excitement, gratitude, and a continued commitment to ensuring that culture and the Arts remains a place where every learner can belong, grow, and thrive.
