🎶Final Feedback
As we come to the close of another incredible year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the wonderful achievements and experiences we’ve shared in the Music Department.
This year, our students have not only grown as musicians but have also demonstrated remarkable creativity, collaboration, and dedication. From captivating performances at all concerts this year, to the enthusiasm shown in rehearsals and lessons, their passion for music has truly shone through.
Your unwavering support has been instrumental in their success. Whether it was encouraging practice at home, attending events, or cheering them on, your involvement has made a world of difference. It is through this shared effort that we’ve been able to cultivate a vibrant and inspiring musical community.
I am appreciative of the heart-warming positive feedback I've received regarding the Gala Concert. I am incredibly proud of all of our Grovite Musos for their wonderful performances at the concert, and grateful for the support of my dear colleagues, who assisted me in ensuring the success of the concert.
As we look ahead to the coming year, I’m excited about the opportunities and challenges that await us. From new repertoire to exciting performances and workshops, we’ll continue to nurture our students’ love for music and help them achieve their full potential.
Above are some images and video footage taken at the Concert. More images were shared on our official school Social Media platforms.

Sadly, I wish to inform our Music Community that Miss Callula-Clay Smith will be leaving The Grove Primary School at the end of the school year as she will be taking up more responsibility at Herschel Preparatory. We appreciate the commitment Miss Callula-Clay Smith has shown to her pupils and The Grove Music Department in general. With her kind and gentle teaching style, Miss Callula was able to offer an individualised approach for each of her pupils, allowing each pupil to reach his/her full potential.
During her time here, Miss Callula has also managed to build up an army of drummers; with a few of them participating in Competitions and Examinations this year. Miss Callula-Clay Smith is committed to ensuring that her Grove pupils are well looked after, and will liaise with me in finding a suitable replacement for her. More details regarding Miss Smith’s replacement will be communicated at the start of the New School Year. I wish to assure all parents that your child’s drumming lessons will continue during 2025, as per normal.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank Miss Smith for her dedication, patience, and overall brilliant work ethic she displayed during her time at The Grove. I wish her well in all her future endeavours, and encourage her to come and visit us next year.
Go well, Callula!

As we reach the end of Term 3, I want to take the opportunity to reflect on an incredibly busy term. Our Junior learners are very busy rehearsing for the upcoming Foundation Phase Play; learning their lyrics, dance moves and making sure to sing the correct notes! We've also reached the end of a wonderful run of the Kaapse Afrikaanse Eisteddfod, having received our final set of results yesterday. Our ensembles have once again done us proud and received outstanding results! A huge congratulations to the String Ensemble, Chamber Ensemble and the Orff Ensemble participants and ensemble directors. Their results are as follows:
String Ensemble received Honours.
Chamber Ensemble received Honours.
Orff Ensemble received Distinction.
We originally communicated that we will be acknowledging all our competition musician and artist participants during an Assembly before the end of Term 3, but due to a delay in awaiting final results and certificates from the relevant organisers, we will be doing a Cultural Assembly during week 2 of Term 4 to acknowledge all our musicians and artists who took part in the Kaapse Afrikaanse Eisteddfod, Cape Town Eisteddfod and other Music competitions as well.
I wish to thank all our parents who attended our recent Grade 6 & 7 Concert. The concert was a wonderful success, and I felt incredibly inspired after listening to how well our learners are performing. I am incredibly proud of all our Grove musicians who continue to show perseverance, dedication and incredible talent.

🎶Feedback:
It's been an eventful few weeks in the Music Department. We've had many learners perform in the recent run of the Kaapse Afrikaanse and the Cape Town Eisteddfod, receiving fantastic results! This year, the majority of our ensembles also participated in the respective categories of the Kaapse Afrikaanse Eisteddfod, be it in person or digitally, and the results have been exemplary. We are still awaiting for more results from video submissions submitted last week. I will post ALL KAE results on the portal before the end of term, as well as acknowledge all our participants during Assembly.
Please be reminded that all certificates received after the performances will be kept by your child’s teacher as we’d like to acknowledge all performers in assembly at the end of the Eisteddfod period, before the end of Term 3. The certificates will be returned to you after the assembly. This is also a request to all learners who do not receive music tuition at The Grove, to bring in their certificates to be acknowledged in assembly.
🎶Upcoming:
Our annual Grade 6 & 7 Concert takes place next Tuesday! This concert is a celebration of all our Grade 6 and 7 Individual Music Pupils. Please join us as we acknowledge the hard work of our Senior learners, and also take the opportunity to thank our Grade 7's for their musicianship.

As per Mrs Green's weekly update, I have returned to work after my maternity leave and I am looking forward to reconnect with the Grove Music Community.
Becoming a parent of two has been a wonderful and transformative experience, and I am eager to bring the same energy and commitment to my role as Head of Music. I am grateful for the support and understanding I have received during this time.
I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Mrs Green for stepping in and leading the Music Department during my maternity leave. Your dedication, professionalism, amazing initiatives and care in handling all the responsibilities have been truly remarkable.
I have received wonderful feedback, and it is clear that you have made a significant positive impact. I am incredibly grateful for your hard work and the continuity you provided to the team and students.
Thank you for everything you've done to ensure a smooth transition in my absence. I am fortunate to have had such a capable and supportive colleague take over while I was away.
Please note: all Music Department queries may now be emailed to me, avanderspeck@thegrove.co.za.
I also wish to take this opportunity to thank Mr Roos for the fantastic work he has also done in my absence. I want to thank him for his professionalism, positive attitude and willingness to collaborate. It's amazing to see how fond the learners have become of Mr Roos, and are incredibly sad to see him "leave". I am particularly astounded at the amazing Jazz Vocal Ensemble Mr Roos has created. The ensemble sounds absolutely incredible and I cannot wait to hear them perform again. Mr Roos was also able to seamlessly fit in with the Grove Staff and quickly adapt to the Grove school community, which is truly commendable.
I am happy to announce that Mr Roos has agreed to stay on as a Part-time teacher, offering Jazz Vocal tuition and continuing with his direction of the Jazz Vocal Ensemble. If you wish for your child to sign up for Jazz Vocal Individual Lessons, please get in touch with Mr Roos on infodamianroos@gmail.com. Mr Roos will begin these lessons from Term 4 onwards.
Today, both choirs will be performing at The Kaapse Afrikaanse Eisteddfod this afternoon. I want to wish our learners and teachers well in their performances today. I am confident that all the preparation and endless rehearsals will filter through their angelic voices.

Week 8
🎵Music Quote of the week
“Music ‘brings us together, helping us reflect upon who we are, where we have come from, and what lies ahead.’ The arts and music transcend ‘languages, cultures, and borders’ … and helps ‘exchange ideas and styles and share in the artistic vibrancy born from diverse experiences and traditions.”
🎵Music Staff Update
This week we bid farewell to an outstanding colleague and Violin Teacher, Mrs. Carla van Wyk, whose radiant smile was able to brighten anyone’s day. As Mrs. van Wyk gets ready to journey to the shores of Mauritius, we’d like to express our gratitude for her contribution to The Grove Music Department. We will remember her fondly for her patience, dedication and passion for music teaching. There is no doubt that Mrs. van Wyk’s pupils will always hold a special place in her heart. We also know that Mrs. van Wyk’s pupils will miss their time together, but hopefully they will continue playing, practising and carrying forward the love for Music that Mrs. van Wyk was able to instil in them.
We’d also like to express our heartfelt appreciation to Ms. Chiara Wheatley who has been working alongside Mrs. van Wyk in order to ensure a smooth transition from one teacher to another.
This week also marks the end of Mr. Roos’ time with us as a substitute Music Teacher, as Mrs. van der Speck will resume her teaching obligations and duties as Head of the Music Department. Mr. Roos has been a wonderful asset to The Grove during Mrs van der Speck’s absence. Arriving at school every morning, beautiful jazz piano melodies would float down the hallway and provide a bright start to every day. Mr. Roos fell right into step with the busyness of the Grove and conducted the Chamber Ensemble and Senior Choir on a weekly basis. Mr Roos also used his talents as a vocalist to start the Grade 7 vocal Ensemble, who have already had several performance opportunities at school. Mr. Roos’ passion for Music and his commitment to the learners was evident in how thoroughly he prepared his lessons, trying to find the best way to help the learners connect with Music on a deeper level. We wish him all the best in his professional music career.
🎵Junior and Senior Choir Eisteddfod‼️
We’d like to send out a heartfelt thank you to all Families who kindly offered transport for children to and from Jan van Riebeeck High School, and also those who sponsored Music T-shirts. Your kindness and generosity has enabled our children to not miss out on this wonderful performance opportunity. We wish them well for the performance on Wednesday August 28th.

Week 11
🎵Music Quote of the week
“Where words fail, Music speaks.”
This has been a whirlwind of a term, but so rewarding with many hours of wonderful music made and shared. We said goodbye to Mr. van Dijk and welcomed Ms. Wheatley on board, as well as Mr. Roos, who has been standing in for Mrs. van der Speck during her maternity leave. A huge thank you to our large body of Music teachers for supporting and guiding the children throughout the term in the wonderful way that they have done.
During Music Open Week, parents were given the opportunity to sit in on lessons and engage with Music teachers. We hope this was helpful for parents to witness what happens during Music lessons. The Social Club dinner showcased many of our Ensembles and both Junior and Senior Choir. It still remains one of the highlights of the year. Our 4th/5th Grade learners were the first to perform at the annual Grade level Music Concert and all learners did a sterling job. The Grade 2 learners also performed superbly at their concert. For many of these young learners it was the first time performing in front of an audience and we applaud them for handling it so well.
We’ve also had several internal Lunchtime Concerts this term and it is growing in popularity. Learners have also performed during Assembly this term and we hope to continue this next term.
We’d like to thank all families for the marvellous level of support shown to the Music Department and for valuing and appreciating the need for music in your child’s life. Wishing everyone a wonderful school holiday!
🎵Music Achievements‼️

🎼Updates
🎵InterSen Phase Controlled Tests and Music Lessons‼️
With the assessment period looming and the early school closure during this period, there might be some uncertainties about the continuity of music lessons. If children are not able to attend lessons during their regular time slot, all music teachers will try their utmost to accommodate children outside of their regular lesson time wherever possible. Please keep in mind that our Part time Music Teachers have teaching obligations elsewhere and might not be able to accommodate all learners in their alternate preferred time slot. We are working in conjunction with classroom teachers to find alternate lesson times during this period. We ask for grace and flexibility during this time as we try to maintain continuity as much as possible. Please be assured that teachers do aim to meet the required lesson quota for the year.
Understanding that the days leading up to an assessment and the entire assessment period may be stressful for some, we urge you to get in touch with your child’s teacher to let them know if your child chooses not to come to lessons during the assessment period.
We wish all our Grade 4 - 7 learners well as they prepare for their assessments. We wish them calm and clarity of mind for each paper they write.

For many of our learners it was their very first time performing in front of an audience and they did everyone proud. Hats off to them! Please take a look at our Facebook page to see some pictures of the event as well as the creative hats that many of our learners wore to the concert.

Week 5 Update
The Social Club dinner last week, which included several performances from our Music Department, was a huge success. Thank you Music Families for sacrificing your time on a school night to have your children perform at the Social Club event. It was so endearing to watch them radiate in confidence and perform so superbly. The audience were truly appreciative and really enjoyed all the Music entertainment provided. Thank you, again!🎶
🎻Important Announcement
It is with sadness that I need to inform you that Mr. Matthijs van Dijk will not be returning to The Grove Music Department, in order to focus on other aspects of his career. We appreciate the commitment Mr. van Dijk has shown to his pupils and The Grove Music Department in general. With his kind and gentle teaching style, he was able to offer an individualized approach for each of his pupils. Mr. van Dijk has made a big impact on the String Ensemble and we thank him for his dedication to the program and the learners who are part of the Ensemble. We’d like to assure you that Mr. van Dijk has taken the necessary steps to provide uninterrupted tuition for his pupils. Ms. Chiara Wheatley, with whom Mr. van Dijk’s pupils are already familiar, will be permanently taking over Mr. van Dijk’s pupils as well as heading up the String Ensemble. Mr. van Dijk has been a great asset to The Grove and we’d like to wish him well on his musical journey ahead.
Unfortunately we will also be saying goodbye to another Violin teacher later this year, namely Mrs. Carla van Wyk. Mrs. van Wyk will be immigrating and will therefore be unable to continue teaching at The Grove after Term 3. Mrs. van Wyk hopes to start the transition process for her pupils towards the end of Term 2 and will be working closely with Ms. Chiara Wheatley in order to facilitate this process. Mrs. van Wyk will be in touch, in due course, with all parents whose children are currently having lessons with her, to provide further context.

Week 1 Update
We’d like to welcome everyone back to school and hope that you had a wonderful time away from school. We have a number of updates to share below:
Music Staff Welcome
We’d like to welcome Mr Damian Roos to our vibrant Music Department. Mr. Roos will be substituting for Mrs. van der Speck while she’s away on maternity leave. Mr. Roos graduated from the University of Cape Town with a BMus Honours degree, specializing in Jazz Studies, and manages his own studio. Mr. Roos recently taught at Bergvliet High School. His strengths lie in vocal and piano tuition, ensemble training and music arrangement. Mr. Roos is passionate about helping students grow as musicians by offering focused individualized attention and guidance.
We also welcome on board Ms. Chiara Wheatley who joins us as a part-time staff member. Ms. Wheatley’s musical journey began with the enchanting notes of piano and violin in her early years. She studied at the University of Pretoria, where she completed her degree with distinction and actively contributed to the University’s orchestra. As an ad hoc member for various ensembles and a participant in esteemed music festivals like the Stellenbosch International Chamber Festival and the University of Pretoria Music Festival, Ms. Wheatley immersed herself in diverse musical experiences. With a rich background of six years in professional teaching and performing across Pretoria and Johannesburg, she now brings her musical expertise to Cape Town.
We wish Mr. Roos and Ms. Wheatley all the best as they settle into The Grove.

Music Open Week:
Our annual Music Open Week for 2024 will take place from the 15th - 19th of April. More details regarding this to follow.
IP Assessments and Music Lessons:
With the IP phase's continuous assessment program and test week starting this week, I know that there are some obvious concerns as to how it affects individual music lessons. Music Teachers have been asked to adjust their timetables, and where possible, move music lessons around to accommodate our IP learners writing assessments. Please note that this may not always be possible, especially when there are two assessments being written on one day, but we do our utmost best to try and squeeze in lessons when we can. Please also remember that our part-time teachers teach at various other schools, and cannot always come back on another day to reschedule a lesson. This being said, please be assured that music lesson quotas are always reached for the year. Thanking you in advance for your trust, understanding and cooperation in this regard.
I understand that the period leading up to assessments can be stressful for learners, and some learners prefer to remain in class to feel adequately prepared for an upcoming assessment and would rather not attend a Music Lesson. In a case like this, please communicate with your child's Music Teacher to inform the teacher that you are happy for your child to forfeit the music lesson for that day and that you do not expect the teacher to reschedule this lesson.
Please email me with any enquiries regarding this.
For any further enquiries, please email me at avanderspeck@thegrove.co.za.

Your child's teacher will provide all the necessary details such as the amount of pieces your child will be entered for, and the amount due. Please note that it's up to your child's Music Teacher's discretion when deciding upon who to enter for this competition.

Music Open Week:
Our annual Music Open Week for 2024 will take place from the 15th - 19th of April. More details regarding this to follow.
IP Assessments and Music Lessons:
With the IP phase's continuous assessment program and test week approaching, I know that there are some obvious concerns as to how it affects individual music lessons.
Marimbas:
We have received an exciting amount of applications for Junior Marimbas this year that we've decided to create 2 Junior Marimbas Ensembles for 2024! The two ensembles will rehearse on a Wednesday and a Thursday respectively from 14:20 - 15:05. You will be notified by Marimba Jam as to which group your child forms part of (they have already created WhatsApp Groups for each group). Please note that the "Thursday" and "Wednesday" group is now full.
Please note that no child will be allowed to attend Junior Marimba rehearsals if they are not signed up on the register. We had a few learners pitch up at Junior Marimbas last week who were not signed up; this puts pressure on Miss Keera Kirsty, as it interrupts her rehearsals and makes it difficult for her to ask them to leave.
Rising Stars Picnic Concert:
Please see attached above a letter regarding the upcoming Marimba Jam Concert; Rising Stars Picnic Concert. This letter provides all the necessary detail regarding this concert, and it involves both Junior Marimba ensembles and the Senior Marimba Ensemble. Please note that this not a school event, and completely managed by Marimba Jam. This means that Marimba Jam is responsible for the logistics and communication of the event and all learners involved will fall under the Marimba Jam Entity. A letter from myself regarding this will be communicated shortly.

Welcome Back to 2024!
I trust that everyone had a wonderful break and festive season. We are back; and almost ready to welcome back all our musicians; but first, a few things;
Music Parent Evening:
This year, our annual Music Parent Evening on the 25th of January at 18:00 in the School Hall. We encourage all our parents, 'old' and new, to attend to receive important information regarding Music Lessons for 2024. This is also a chance to chat to your child's individual teacher about expectations, practising requirements, goals and general points. This meeting is also especially important for new music applicant parents to attend. The meeting will be short and sweet.
Staff Welcome:
We were sad to bid farewell to Miss Louisa Theart at the end of 2023. Louise resigned after quite a few years at The Grove as a part-time Flute and Saxophone teacher, to focus on her full-time employment at The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. We wish her well in all her future endeavours and thank her for her service to The Grove.
With every sad goodbye, comes an exciting hello! And so I wish to take this opportunity to welcome Mr Seth Alexander to The Grove Primary School as our new part-time Saxophone & Clarinet teacher. Seth is a zealous saxophonist who is currently doing his Honours in Western Classical Performance. He also ad-hocs with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra for various performances, and enjoy solo performances as well. Seth joins our dynamic team, eager to grow our woodwind department. Welcome, Seth!
Individual Music Applications:
The digital Music Application form is still active and open to more Music Applications. Thank you to those who have already applied; you will receive communication regarding your child's music application within the next two weeks. Please note that the closing date for all individual music lessons and ensembles is 26 January 2024. Should you be interested in signing your child up for lessons, please see the link below. All individual music lessons will officially start on the 29th of January. This is to accommodate the placement and timetabling of any last minute application received by the end of next week. Some teachers may opt to start lessons next week and will be in contact with you should this be the case.
Ensembles/Extra-Mural:
This year, we are excited to introduce two brand new ensembles! The first ensemble is called the Boomwhacker Ensemble. Boomwhackers are colourful plastic tubes, which produce a very pleasing sound when struck against any surface. They are a very effective tool in providing a novel way in which to learn about scales, melody, rhythm, ensemble playing, teamwork and other general musical knowledge, in an exciting and immersive environment. The ensemble will focus upon simple songs, such as nursery rhymes, and will be lots of fun for all involved.
The Boomwhacker Ensemble is free of charge, and is open to eight Grade 2 learners who will be accepted on a first-come, first- served basis. If you are interested in joining this ensemble, please complete the form below:
The Boomwhacker Ensemble rehearses every Wednesday from 07:15 - 07:45 in the Singing Room.
The Second new ensemble is called the Music, and Movement Ensemble.
This ensemble will combine music and physical movement in an engaging and fun way, including playing instruments, singing simple songs and rhymes, moving to the beat, body percussion, parachute activities and so much more. Music and movement activities frequently target and support co-ordination and balance, as well as supporting gross motor and fine motor skills development over time. Language development and communication skills are also improved through repetition in this fun and engaging environment.
This is a free class and is open to interested Grade 1 & 2 learners. The class is limited to 12 learners. This ensemble will rehearse every Tuesday from 14:00 - 14:30. Spots will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. If your child is interested in joining this class, please complete the form below.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1icyJ8u7UhRces7oGq674cNa3kow9FBj5xJ0lIS2Rmos/edit?usp=sharing
Please note that all our other Ensembles; Junior Choir, Senior Choir, Orff Ensemble, Chamber Ensemble and the Recorder Ensemble will resume rehearsals from 29 January 2024. All details regarding rehearsal times and days will be communicated shortly.
Our Junior and Senior Marimba Ensembles will resume rehearsals next week, 25/26 January. The times are as follows:
Junior Marimbas - Thursday 14:40 - 15:05 in the Singing Room.
Senior Marimbas - Friday 13:15 - 14:15 in the Singing Room.
Please note that Marimba Jam will be in contact with all parents of learners who were in Marimbas last year, as well as those who applied to join this year. Please look out for this email to ensure a smooth placement process.
Current Individual Music Pupils:
Please complete this form should you wish for your child to continue with their current instrument next year. It is compulsory for parents/guardians of all our existing learners to complete this form. This information is needed urgently as our Music Teachers are in the process of finalising their Pupil Lists.
Choir Auditions:
Our annual Senior and Junior Choir auditions will take place this Thursday and Friday. Please note that all children, regardless of whether or not, they were in the choir last year, will be auditioned. Please note that no child is garuanteed a place in both Junior/Senior Choir, even if they formed part of the choir last year.
All choir auditions are done on merit. We listen for particular musical aspects in the audition, such as aural ability, vocal range, voice tone, rhythm fluency and so much more, and choose based on the singing heard at the time. All children will be fairly auditioned, and we strive to make the experience as enjoyable as possible. Should your child not be placed; we ask that you please do not email myself or Mrs Green to reconsider or reaudition. The task at hand is already impossible as we have to audition over 300 children and only place 50. Please trust us in our judgement and professionalism, and know that we wish we could place all the eager singers!
We will issue letters to the successful candidates when we have finalised the process.
Music Lesson Policy:
The 2024 Music Lesson Policy will be finalised and shared with parents within this week. It is compulsory for all parents/guardians of learners who receive individual lessons to sign this policy and return it back to your child's teacher.
If you have any further enquiries, please email me at avanderspeck@thegrove.co.za

IP Assessments and Individual Music Lessons:
With the IP phase assessment period in full swing, I know that there are some obvious concerns as to how it affects individual music lessons. Music Teachers have been asked to adjust their timetables, and where possible, move music lessons around to accommodate our IP learners writing assessments. Unfortunately, our Orff Ensemble is now full, but Mrs Green will be managing a waiting list for any pupil who still wishes to sign up.

Music updates 26 January 2023:
Congratulations:
A huge congratulations to Mr Matthew Foster, who is now a Full-Time Music Teacher! Mrs Green and I are incredibly happy to have him join our team, and we are excited to see what the future holds. Mr Foster will continue to provide piano tuition, as well as accompany the Senior and Junior Choir and will be teaching class music to grades 1, 2 and 5. Welcome, Matthew!
Individual Lesson Updates:
Our Music Staff are all very busy finalising their timetables, communicating with parents and pushing to officially start lessons next week! Thank you to all our parents for your patience during this process. All music lessons will resume at the start of week 3, and your child will be fetched for his/her lesson by the relevant teacher. Please let me know if you have not received any communication regarding your child's application.
Our music applications will officially close next Tuesday, the 31st of January 2023.
Extra-Mural Programme:
A bit of insight: Our initial plan of starting a string ensemble and windband is unfortunately not able to commence this year, due to many valid reasons. It is for this reason, that we will continue with the wonderful orchestra programme, but please note that this ensemble will no longer be called, "Orchestra", but rather The Grove Chamber Ensemble. This ensemble is for selected string, woodwind, percussion and brass pupils. Like the orchestra programme, this ensemble will be for children who are at a comfortable level of playing. All orchestra members from last year, will automatically form part of this ensemble this year, should they so wish. Any pupil wishing to join the ensemble this year, must please contact me @avanderspeck@thegrove.co.za to set up an audition.
We are also introducing Orff Ensemble this year! An orff ensemble is similar to marimba ensemble, but on a smaller scale. The orff ensemble will make use of small xylophones, glockenspiel's and various other percussion instruments. Pupils will play these instruments as means of accompaniment whilst singing or even dancing! This ensemble is open to grade 3 and 4 learners only, and selection is based on a first come, first served basis. This programme will be run by Mrs Jill Green. If you would like to sign your child up for this amazing ensemble, please email jillgreen@thegrove.co.za.
Marimbas:
I communicated last week that Marimbas will commence this week, but we've decided to put this on hold for now. Marimbas will commence once our Marimba teacher is ready to start. The starting date will be communicated shortly.
Senior and Junior Choir:
After a successful audition process, myself and Mrs Green have handed out letters to the successful candidates who were selected for either Senior or Junior Choir. Please return the signed letter as soon as possible. If you have any queries regarding this, please email:
Mrs Jill Green - Junior Choir jillgreen@thegrove.co.za
Mrs Andrea Van Der Speck - Senior Choir avanderspeck@thegrove.co.za
Recorder Ensemble:
The recorder ensemble will continue this year. Please note that this is an ensemble for advanced recorder players only. Should you wish to sign your child up for this amazing, specialised ensemble, please email avanderspeck@thegrove.co.za to set up an audition. Pupils that were in the ensemble last year will automatically be apart of the ensemble this year.
Our Music Extra-Mural will start next week, yay! Please see details below:
Monday: Junior Choir - 07:20 - 08:00 Pavillion
Monday: The Grove Chamber Ensemble - 07:25 - 08:00 Hall
Tuesday: Recorder Ensemble - 07:25 - 08:00 Singing Room
Wednesday: No ensembles due to assembly
Thursday: Orff Ensemble - 07:20 - 08:00 Singing Room

Head of Music
Music updates 20 January 2023:
Welcome back everybody! I trust everyone had a wonderful festive season, and took some time to rest.
I am confident that 2023 will be a good year for all of our musicians, teachers and parents. I look forward to working in collaboration with all our music teachers, learners and parents.
A few things to note:
I am thrilled to welcome two new violin teachers to our dynamic music department. Allow me to introduce you to them:
Carla Van Wyk:
Mrs Carla van Wyk was born into a musical family, and started her journey into music at the age of four. She later received her BMus at Wits university, specialising in individual teaching and performance. Carla has been teaching violin, viola and piano for over 25 years both in Cape Town and Johannesburg. She has a deep love for music, dance, cats and chamber music, and encourages all her students to experience the joy of making music together. She is also trying her hand at making a Viola d’amore, which she hopes to finish in her lifetime.
Matthijs Van Dijk:
"Hi, my name is Matthijs van Dijk, and I am a violinist and composer who has been working professionally within the South African music industry since high-school. As a violinist, I have many years experience playing with groups such as the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, The ShhArt Ensemble, and Karen Zoid, amongst many others. As a composer, my music is regularly performed locally and internationally, in concert halls, as well as on screens, such as for the animated series “Jungle Beat”.
I have found that in this industry it's very important to be a well-rounded musician, comfortable with both JS Bach and Justin Bieber. So, besides teaching The Classics, as well as the technical fundamentals, I encourage my students to learn music that they want to play, by incorporating popular music (as well as occasionally composition classes) within their lessons and ensembles. Besides encouraging regular practice, I believe that the most important thing about learning an instrument is to have fun!"
Welcome to The Grove Primary School, Carla and Matthijs!
Regarding music applications:
The deadline for music applications is 31st January 2023. All correspondence regarding the status of your child's application will be communicated to you within the next two weeks by the relevant teacher.
We ask for your patience as we sift through all our start of the year admin, and be assured that we doing our utmost best to start all music lesson as soon as possible.
It is also compulsory for parents of existing pupils to please fill out the form below. Thank you to those who have already done so.
Kindly click on the following link to apply for and/or confirm continuing music lessons.
Music Extra-Mural Programme:
Please note that the Music Extra-Mural programme will commence at the start of week 3. All the finer details of all our programmes will be communicated next week.
I am happy to announce that Junior and Senior Marimbas will commence next week (23 January - 27 January 2023). Skye has assured me that she will be in contact with all her parents, (existing and new), within the next few days. Please note that marimba programme can only accommodate a certain amount of pupils at a time. We have received a wealth of marimba applications, and will unfortunately not able to place ALL new applications, especially for Senior Marimba. Pupils will be placed on a "first come first serve" basis. Those pupils not placed will be added to a waiting list, managed by Skye.
Rehearsal times are as follows: Please note that the venue for marimba practice will now take place in the singing room, and no longer the hall.
Junior Marimbas: 14:15 - 15:00 - Singing room
Senior Marimbas: 13:00 - 14:00 - Singing room
Have a wonderful weekend.
